JOB DESCRIPTION

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

The main purpose of the Climate Change Advocacy Field Monitor role in Kismayu is to promote community resilience to climate change by empowering local populations, particularly those in vulnerable situations such as Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps.

DUTIES OF CLIMATE CHANGE ADVOCACY FIELD MONITOR

·    Work directly with local communities to raise awareness about climate issues, advocacy efforts, gather feedback and ensure the voices of the most affected by climate change are heard in policy discussions.

·      Conduct training sessions and workshops to empower community members with knowledge about climate change and advocacy techniques helping to build local capacity.

·    Collaborate with stakeholders including government agencies, NGOs and community organizations to promote climate advocacy efforts.

·        Mentor community leaders and activists within IDP camps to enhance their advocacy skills and empower them to lead climate initiatives.

·        Conduct regular assessments of affected areas to document changes and impacts.

·        Assist in developing and implementing advocacy campaigns aimed at influencing climate legislation.

·        Develop programs to engage youth in climate action and advocacy, fostering their leadership and participation in local initiatives.

·        Gather data on environmental conditions, community impacts and the effectiveness of climate policies and initiatives.

Skills and Qualifications

·   Certificate/Diploma in Environmental Science, Social Sciences, Development Studies or International Relation, Mass Communication or any related field.

·      2 years of experience in environmental advocacy, conducting field assessment and engaging with affected communities.

·   An impeccable professional standard of ethics as well as the willingness and ability to implement accountability activities within the LWF World Service is essential.

·        The candidate should be well versed with the local context.

COMPETENCIES

·        Strong verbal and written communication skills for engaging diverse audiences and conveying complex information clearly.

·        Ability to listen to community concerns and feedback, fostering trust and collaborative relationships.

·        Skills in advocating for community interests and negotiating with various stakeholders to achieve desired outcomes.

·        Understanding and respect for local customs and traditions to engage effectively with communities.

·        Mobilizing community members, building coalitions, and facilitating participation in advocacy efforts.

·        Strong analytical and critical thinking skills to identify challenges and develop practical solutions.

·        Ability to create and maintain relationships with NGOs, government agencies, and community organizations.

·        Fluent in written and spoken English and Somali languages.

·        Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.

·  Strong dedication to environmental issues and a desire to promote sustainable practices.

·  Understanding and valuing the experiences and needs of vulnerable communities, particularly in IDP camps.

·  Ability to tolerate and respect for cultural and religious diversity in the work place.

·   Good communication and presentation skills.

·  A good team player with high degree of initiative, flexibility and tolerance.
